Job Description:

The SES III contract provides IT services throughout all aspects of the engineering process of the entire space systems arena. We are looking for a Senior Software Systems Engineer to support in-house Engineering and Flight Software hosted on high performance systems running Ubuntu Linux operating system. The candidate will be trained to run inhouse applications such as Freespace and will be responsible for deployment, patching, system reliability and performance monitoring.

This job is located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD and will work on the Lab IT Services Team supporting the On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (OSAM-1) project.

Primary Duties:

  • Deployment and management of Linux Operating systems, OS patches, NASA approved system baselines, and engineering/flight software.
  • Test and monitor for degradation in software efficiency and performance due to driver changes, performance bottlenecks or security patches.
  • Understand and ensure the flow of data to the CPU and GPU at a low level to ensure high end graphic support and performance of flight software is stable after system changes or upgrades.
  • Test and present options for remotely executing Monte Carlo runs requiring high end graphics support for remote users and/or AWS Cloud deployments.
  • Execute, monitor, and restart test scripts (Monte Carlo simulations) which may take days to fully complete.
  • Facilitate the upkeep of the Freespace web-based services including wiki, repo, data-distribution server/DLF, nightly regression test suite, and web services
  • Manage mandated OS upgrade projects for Ubuntu Linux including porting Freespace and other utilities to any newly required OS.


  • 7+ years of experience with Linux systems administration (Ubuntu preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience coding in Python, C, C++, C#/.NET, and /or Java.
  • 2+ years of experience with configuration management tools (Ansible preferred).
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to multi-task, adapt to change, and work in a cooperative environment.
  • Individual must meet government NAC and citizenship/permanent residency requirements for access to NASA GSFC. Extensive background investigation will be performed as a requirement of the job.
  • Familiarity with NASA GSFC systems administration, network, and security policies is ideal.
  • Familiarity with compliance requirements of NIST FIPS/FISMA framework is a plus.

Relevant Experience: 7 years


  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer-related field (Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, etc.)

Security Clearance and other Requirements: Individual must meet government NAC and citizenship/ permanent residency requirements for access to NASA GSFC. Extensive background investigation will be performed as a requirement of the job.
